Jos Buttler had won the toss and England chose to bat first, thereby more or less shutting the door on Pakistan’s semi-finals chances. England managed to defeat Pakistan by 93 runs at the Eden Gardens on Saturday to end their defence of the World Cup title with a consolatory win. Spurred by half centuries from Ben Stokes (84), Jonny Bairstow (59) and Joe Root (60), England piled on 337/9 against Pakistan in their last group stage game. They then reduced the Pakistan team to 150/7, before the tail wagged and put on some runs. But it was too little too late! Earlier, England captain Jos Buttler had won the toss and opted to bat first. Losing the toss meant that Pakistan were all but out from the semifinals contention.
